Start Clean in 2014 with Gabriella: Day 1

As you and I start this journey of going on a 21 day detox or what I like to call, “reset”, I want to document my journey a long with what I actually ate to help inspire you. The first day went not so bad except that I had dinner with my family and what was prepared was red meat. I made it a rule to only have lean beef 1 time per week, so it looks like that was my 1 time for the week.

Day 1 Recap:

The day started off well because even though some people ward off caffeine during a time of cleansing, I do not see it as an issue for me so I have kept my daily cup of Philz coffee. I just made some adjustments by switching my low fat version with Stevia or Splenda to just plain coffee of my choice with light, unsweetened almond milk and no sweetener. I think this is great because it helps me start the day not craving sweets and I have began already to crave the bitterness that comes with coffee, and have started to taste the actual notes of different flavors it is supposed to have. I also started the day off with 1 scoop Nectar Naturals with 8 oz. unsweetened almond milk. I have kept more natural artificial sweeteners in the diet for the purpose of a protein powder. I think this is beneficial because usually erythritol or stevia are seen as being “non-addictive” and the closest to more natural forms of artificial sweeteners. Typically, I have the bad habit of either grabbing trail mix or dry high fiber cereal when I was rushed out of the house and needed something until I got to the office 2 hours later.

The day was followed by consuming greens with lean turkey and fire roasted salsa (no sugar added) and 1 Tbsp. of avocado for lunch. I also have allowed 1/4 cup of berries in the diet because the sugar impact is low so I whipped up a  homemade chia seed yogurt pudding with 4-5 blackberries for snack and then later had  lean beef and salad for dinner after my 90 “kick butt” spinning session.

The TRUE test comes at night so that is what most concerned me about my first day. The night time can be hard for me because I work out everyday for 60-90 minutes of intense training which makes me crave sugar later that night. To help combat this,  I bought an organic chai tea at my local integrative pharmacy (chai tea bags) and slowly sipped this as I prepared for bed. I had a few almonds as a quick snack and was satisfied to end the day. I did not feel deprived nor did I crave sugar.

Helpful tasks

One of my New Year resolutions was to start to journal as well document my intake. I think that both of these are also very important to do when you are doing an experiment such as this cleanse. The point of doing an experiment or activity like this is not only to get back into a better eating pattern, but also to recognize influences on our diet besides just hunger or convenience. I want you all to think about what are the usual causes for you to eat? Now that you cannot eat sugar, what can you do to bring you pleasure? What do you think are some bad habits that you need to be more aware of? Along with writing down my intake and feeling for the day, I ensure what I am getting nutritionally by entering my full day into My Fitness Pal.

Tomorrow I am going to do a pretty similar day, but I am hoping to have some seafood for dinner and possibly add in some eggs to help increase my protein and calories for the day.
